Discover Myriel

Walking into Myriel feels less like stepping into a formal dining room and more like being welcomed into someone’s thoughtfully curated home. Tucked along 470 Cleveland Ave S, St Paul, MN 55105, United States, the restaurant has become one of those places locals quietly recommend when they want to impress without showing off. I’ve eaten here more than once, and each visit reinforced why it keeps showing up in conversations among chefs, food writers, and neighborhood regulars.

The menu changes often, which is part of the charm. Instead of locking itself into a rigid list of dishes, the kitchen works with what’s fresh and available from regional farmers. On one visit, I watched the staff explain how a particular vegetable dish existed only because a nearby grower had an unusually good harvest that week. That approach mirrors what the USDA and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture have highlighted in recent farm-to-table research: shorter supply chains tend to preserve flavor, reduce waste, and support local economies. You can taste that difference here, especially in the vegetables, which arrive vibrant and thoughtfully prepared.

From an expertise standpoint, the cooking shows deep technical confidence without unnecessary complexity. Sauces are restrained, proteins are treated with respect, and seasoning never overwhelms. I once sat close enough to the open prep area to see a cook carefully finishing a plate, tasting repeatedly before it ever reached the table. That attention to detail reflects classical training paired with modern sensibilities, a balance often praised by organizations like the James Beard Foundation when evaluating standout regional restaurants.

Reviews around St. Paul frequently mention how the dining experience unfolds at an unhurried pace. That’s intentional. Courses arrive when you’re ready, not when a timer says they should. It’s a method borrowed from European tasting menus, but adapted for Midwestern warmth. During a recent dinner, our server explained the origin of a grain used in one dish and why it paired well with the sauce. It never felt scripted, just informed. That level of service builds trust, especially for diners who care about where their food comes from.

The space itself supports the food. Soft lighting, clean lines, and minimal distractions keep the focus on the table. You’re encouraged to talk, linger, and actually experience the meal. According to hospitality studies published by Cornell University, diners who feel relaxed and informed tend to rate restaurants higher overall, even when the menu is adventurous. That research rings true here.

While the restaurant doesn’t chase trends, it quietly influences them. Several younger chefs in the area have mentioned in interviews and informal chats that dining here shaped how they think about simplicity and sourcing. That kind of influence doesn’t happen overnight; it comes from consistency and credibility built over years.

There are limitations worth noting. Because the menu evolves constantly, returning guests won’t find the same dishes twice. For some diners, that unpredictability can be a drawback. Reservations can also be challenging during peak weekends, and walk-ins aren’t always possible. Still, the staff is transparent about availability, and updates are accurate, which helps set expectations.

Location-wise, being on Cleveland Avenue South makes it accessible without feeling exposed. It’s close enough to central St. Paul neighborhoods while maintaining a quiet, residential feel. For anyone scanning restaurant listings or reading reviews in search of something genuinely thoughtful, this spot stands out not through hype, but through practice, patience, and care woven into every plate and interaction.

  • The restaurant seemed quite backed up so wait times were longer than expected but the service was extremely apologetic, friendly and accomodating which more than made up for it. Most other restaurants, in my experience, would have apologized for the longer times and moved on. The staff at Myriel went out of their way to make sure we had a great experience. The atmosphere feels classy and cozy. Dined at 7 so the restaurant was full up. There was moderate noise but you can easily still hear anyone speaking. The food was delicious. The duck breast in particular was amazing. Portions are relatively small but the dishes were also quite rich so they filled my appetite quite nicely.

  • My partner has been wanting to try Myriel since it opened, and we finally popped in for an a la carte experience last night to celebrate his birthday. We are always on the hunt for fine dining experiences that highlight and celebrate vegetarian cuisine, and we had heard that Myriel was a welcoming place for vegetarians. From the moment we stepped into Myriel we felt valued and taken care of. Our server, Dan, was attentive, funny, and knowledgeable. He took time to provide context about the nuances of each dish, as well as the ethos and values of Myriel as a whole. The restaurant was buzzing with energy the whole time we were there, and we loved the earthy decor and intimate seating. Everyone seemed so happy to be there. Everything we ate and drank was a delight to the senses and our palettes. The lavender lemonade was tart and herbaceous. The chilled tomato soup was savory, bright, fresh, and so satisfying. The corn salad took my breath away. I could’ve eaten a quart of it. We loved eating the lentils, pasta, and rustic bread together as one course. They really complemented one another. We appreciated the attention to detail throughout the meal— in terms of presentation, flavor, and construction. The portions are small because each dish is meant to be savored. Each bite is a treat. Thanks for a great experience! Update— We returned today to celebrate a birthday with the vegetarian tasting menu! A triumph— even better than our first experience. I’m adding more photos from tonight…

  • Myriel is a fun experience. A rotating seasonal menu mixes things up and provides a good excuse to come back. Overall, the service I received from everyone was top notch. Between host, server, etc., everybody was friendly and accommodating. The food was great. Started the chilled asparagus soup. Moved onto the Swedish corn waffle. And then Lake Trout for the main. Had to finish it all off woth some rhubarb pie. I enjoyed it all but I have to admit the lake trout was a tad disappointing. Felt like there would be more to it. It was solid but I think another accompiment might really compliment the fish. Amazing wine and digestif selection.

  • While waiting by the bathroom door, I started chatting with two of the waiters. Before I knew it, they handed me a glass to help test a bottle of wine for another table…just to make sure it wasn’t spoiled. That small, funny moment captures the spirit of this restaurant. Warm, personal, and full of genuine hospitality.

  • Book ahead for a special occasion. The menu is small and changes monthly. Chef is a true artist and each dish is amazing. We enjoyed the lamb and duck, both prepared to perfection.

  • This has to be the cutest little restaurant in all of St. Paul, tiny, but they make it work and I figure they can fit a fair amount of people in. Who cares about that right... get to the good stuff! I have come to expect that the service at a fine dining restaurant should match the food, if not exceed it; getting the whole experience, if you will. Myriel is firing on ALL CYLINDERS. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by friend staff - this trend continued through the entire meal; our server was passionate about their restaurant, their food and its sourcing, the ever changing menu because of the (fresh and local) sourcing, as well as it being our first time and making sure we tried everything we wanted plus some. He explained the menu in detail, he took a complete order and coursed it out for us, brought us little sips for various reasons when wines were being discussed. I cannot speaking highly enough of the service. On to the food: I'm speechless. I did add a photo of the menu from the night we went, but please note it does change often, sometimes daily based on the product they have available. I don't think we tried anything where we said 'that was just alright'; the cutest little bites jam packed with flavor (see: Swedish Corn Waffle), the gnocchi has to be the softest pillow of food I've ever put in my mouth - paired with the chantrelle conserva - was such an amazing bite. I had to have a confit duck leg somewhere during the night and the server opted to bring that on its own plate along side of the oyster mushrooms - mostly so I could have it on its own, but also so I could try it with the mushrooms as that is what originally called out to me. YUM - just yum! My husband opted for the Fresh Red Lake Walleye, which is rare to find MN walleye anywhere, but it was wonderful! I opted for the Duck Breast as I was on a duck journey that night (Duck liver pate on the charcuterie plate) - I will say duck breast is nothing something I eaten often, but I'm really glad I ordered it, the skin was crispy, the flavor was intense and it was cooked to perfection. Last but not least was the rhubarb pie (a family recipe) and swedish egg coffee - the perfect end to a perfect night. I should also mention the drinks were all wonderful as well! I cannot wait to go back to Myriel - this will most certainly become a regular spot on our rotation!

  • Beautifully designed for its small footprint. The dishes were incredible, so thoughtfully constructed and well balanced. The buttermilk on the sauteed greens was genius! Highly recommended and can't wait to have a reason to go back. Our only tiny criticism is that our server specifically seemed rushed - to be fair the dining room was full - and she asked us how our food was before we'd even swallowed the first bite. Everything else about the experience was so polished and pleasing (the mismatched 'your Swedish grandma's'-style silverware was a delight!) that tiny service flaws stick out. Overall excellent meal!

  • This was definitely elevated. To me the cuisine was Germanic. Honestly, most Germanic restaurants to me are piles of what we Minnesotan’s call hot dish. Not the case here. I would go back for the duck breast 10 out of 10 times. It was amazing! The Manhattan they made me was shaken, not stirred and if you know anything about Manhattans if you ever had a bad one, it was shaken. That said, at least it wasn’t a “microtini!” BUT, everything else was unique. The gnocchi was made in an unusual way, not with potatoes but rye flour, the best I have ever had! You should try this place.
